The NFU (National Farmers’ Union) has requested the UK government to play a crucial role in maintaining food security, as new figures reveal that British self-sufficiency is currently at 64% and has remained “stagnant” for several years.

The NFU said the government must play a ‘crucial role’ in reversing this downward trend in food security. A green recovery from the COVID-19 outbreak is a ‘golden opportunity’ for British farming to become a global leader in food security.

NFU President explained that having the ability to feed the population is ‘absolutely critical’ for an island nation.
