Inland fish culture has huge potential to grow under fisheries industries. Clustered models need to be developed to support this growth’, said Mr Pratap Chandra Sarangi, Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India at the inaugural session of Fish Mart, a seven-day virtual session organized by CII for the east and north east states of India starting from 24 November 2020. The Hon’ble Minister also spoke at length about Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana which has been announced to enhance fish production to 220 LMT with an investment of over Rs.20,000 crores in the next five years. Under this scheme, 30% of subsidies will be provided to the general category investors and 60 % subsidy will be given to SC, ST category investors.
Dr Arun Kumar Sahoo, Hon’ble Cabinet Minister, Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development and Department of Higher Education, Government of Odisha announced that Odisha has received the “Best Marine State” award and Kalahandi district received the “Best District” Award” in inland fisheries space on the occasion of World Fisheries Day. The Hon’ble Minister talked about Odisha Fisheries Policy, Samridhi 2020 for the advancement of the fisheries sector in the state. He also emphasized on the importance of brackish aquaculture in the state.
According to Mr Nick Low, British Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata, India and UK have vast potential of collaboration in the areas of fish health solution, engineering solution, marine cage culture, cold storage, and deep-sea fishing equipment. Mr Nakamura Yutaka, Consul General, Consulate General of Japan, Kolkata informed that Japan is looking forward to investing in the fish feed industries in India. Mr Amit Saraogi, Chairman, CII ER Fisheries Taskforce & Managing Director, Anmol Feeds Ltd requested the government to increase the CAPEX for fish feed plants under PMMSY and also asked them to encourage the production of floating fish feed.

The session has witnessed a participation of more than 200 people with dignitaries present from other countries like Philippines, Indonesia, Norway, Bangladesh, Vietnam. Philippines has introduced a GPS tracking system for the benefit of the small fishing vehicles. They also encouraged India in the production of milkfish. India can be benefitted from the Norwegian Technology of Environmental Fishing and waste management. At the end of the session Mr Aditya Dash, Co-Convenor, CII Odisha Agro & Agri-Business Panel MD, Ram Assorted Cold Storage Ltd requested for an insurance scheme for fish farmers to the regulatory authorities.
The 7 day virtual exposition will have masterclasses on entrepreneurship development, enhancing fisheries in flood plains, increasing jumbo prawns productivity in fresh water, finance facilitation and packaging. There are buyer-seller meets, logistics session and culinary competition among other programmes in Fish Mart.
