What is World Penguin Day?

World Penguin Day is an opportunity to raise awareness around penguins in general, as these iconic birds face a number of challenges, including global warming, concentrated fishing efforts near penguin colonies, oil spills and mass tourism.

Why is World Penguin Day celebrated on April 25th?

Penguins are a family of 18-19 species of birds that inhabit predominantly the Southern Hemisphere. From the tiny blue penguins of Australia and New Zealand to the majestic emperor penguins of Antarctica, World Penguin Day celebrates each kind.

According to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, April 25th was chosen for the observance, as this day “coincides with the annual northern migration of Adelie penguins.” Hence, April 25th is an important day to acknowledge the indispensable role played by penguins.

Why is it important to conserve them?

As they play a crucial role in the food chain and maintain balance of the ecosystem, it becomes imperative to protect them from the adverse impact of climate change.
