Kenya blocks entry of Uganda sugarcane trucks

Following a new prohibition on the importation of raw sugarcane and brown sugar, Kenya has blocked over 100 Ugandan trucks carrying sugarcane which left Ugandan sugarcane traders, growers and transporters stuck at the Busia border.

Truck drivers have been directed to return to Uganda by Kenyan authorities shortly after they crossed into the neighbouring country.

It may be mentioned here that the East African nation banned cane imports last year. However, it is alleged that some businessmen were sneaking it into Kenya and selling it to some industrial units. In order to curb this practice, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture announced the total ban last week.
