The COVID-19 pandemic reversed years of progress in women’s economic as well as political participation and exacerbated pre-existing inequalities, widening the gender gap by a generation, as per a World Economic Forum (WEF) report.

“The pandemic has fundamentally impacted gender equality in both the workplace and the home, rolling back years of progress,” said WEF’s managing director Saadia Zahidi.

The annual report estimated, on the basis of current trajectory, that the gender gap will not be closed for another 135.6 years.

Overall, Iceland has been ranked the most gender-equal country, while the largest gender gap was in the Middle East and North Africa region.
