To avoid catastrophic global warming, world leaders should announce “climate emergency” in their respective countries, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at a climate summit, urging that there’s a ‘state of emergency’ with regard to global climate change and the countries were unable to meet the targets set in 2015 under the Paris agreement.

The summit notably marked the fifth anniversary of the Paris climate accord.

UN chief said that there weren’t considerable efforts from the countries to cut global emissions. ‘Promises were not enough,’ the UN chief reiterated.

“If we don’t change course, we may be headed for a catastrophic temperature rise of more than 3.0 degrees this century,” UN chief added.
