Sri Lanka’s former Prime Minister and leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremesinghe said the country needs to adopt an agri-based economy. He said this is the only way to feed the increasing population.

By 2050, the population in the Indian Ocean region will increase by 500 million and someone should feed them. But you can’t do that with traditional chena cultivation, the former PM said.

Wickremesinghe stressed that the UNP intends to introduce a new agriculture-based economy and to provide the technology required for that.
