Onion prices in Bangladesh increased by more than 50%, following a ban on exports by the Indian government due to the steady increase in wholesale prices of onions.

Also, excessive rainfall in India’s southern states has damaged the key kitchen staple and delayed harvesting in other states.

Notably, Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE and Sri Lanka are the main importers of Indian onions.

India exported nearly $200 million of onions in the April-June period of FY21 and $440 million in the entire 2019-20.
