Kashmiri saffron, also known as ‘Zafran’ in Urdu, is now available in the United Arab Emirates. “Kashmir saffron” was given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Indian government earlier this year to put the Valley’s brand on the global map.

It must be mentioned here that Kashmiri saffron is renowned worldwide as a spice with several medicinal benefits, representing the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

At the UAE-India Food Security Summit 2020, it was officially launched by Principal Secretary (Agriculture), Government of Jammu and Kashmir Navin K Choudhary and India’s Consul General to Dubai Aman Puri.

“I am delighted that for the first time, Kashmiri saffron has been introduced to the UAE market,” Choudhary said, adding Kashmiri saffron was exported for the first time after it got the GI certification.

“I am sure that its export will grow much more into Dubai and other cities of the UAE and elsewhere.”
