China’s rural policy blueprint to focus on boosting grain yields

In order to boost grain yields and step up support for its domestic seed industry, China’s annual rural policy blueprint placed greater emphasis on ensuring food security. The policy calls for all provinces to accelerate production during the 2021-25 period.

“The uncertainty and instability of the external situation has increased significantly. On grain security, we must not take it lightly for one moment,” Tang Renjian, agriculture minister, said.

Notably, China has strengthened its focus on the issue of food security since the COVID-19 pandemic hit major food exporting countries last year and raised concerns about food supplies’ stability.
