The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced to invest $27.1 million into the purchase of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine, a move that would give the government the means to respond to outbreaks of the disease among animals.

“While we are confident, we can keep foot-and-mouth disease out of the country, as we have since 1929, having access to the vaccine is an important insurance policy,” USDA Marketing and Regulatory Programs Undersecretary Greg Ibach said.

It is worth mentioning here that FMD is an infectious viral disease that affects pigs, cattle, and sheep among others.
